So if you buy or already have an e-scooter, you need to know what parts include for electric scooters. An electric scooter has several vital functions.

Most electric scooters have a handful of different parts, such as batteries, brakes, controllers, decks, handlebars, lights, motors, stems, suspensions, and tires.

Batteries

A scooter battery pack consists of many individual cells.

An electric scooter’s batteries serve as its “gas tank.” Batteries store the energy consumed by the motor and other accessories.

Lithium-ion batteries use in most electric scooters, but lead-acid batteries use in some scooters for kids and other inexpensive models.

The capacity of batteries is measured in watt-hours, abbreviated Wh. Electric scooter range largely determines battery capacity. A monster scooter can have almost 3,000 watt-hours, while budget scooters typically have abilities of around 250 watt-hours.

Brakes

An electric scooter requires a quality braking system, such as the disc brake shown above.

Electric scooters have brakes, just like cars and bicycles. There are two types of electric scooter brakes: mechanical and electronic.

Disc brakes, drum brakes, and foot brakes are mechanical brake systems that use a physical mechanism to slow down the scooter.

There are two types of electronic braking systems: those that use the motor itself for braking and those that use regenerative braking.

Electronic braking systems are typically much weaker than mechanical braking systems. Electronic systems, however, do not require periodic maintenance or adjustments.

It is common for scooters to have both mechanical and electronic brakes. To ensure safety, we recommend scooters with at least two braking systems.

Controller

Motors are by speed controllers based on accelerator input.

The speed controller controls the flow of current from the battery to the motor inside the scooter. Metal cans with many wires typically look like rectangular metal cans. Metal enclosures serve as heat syncs. Controllers receive inputs from the accelerator and (electronic) brake controls and convert them into motor currents.

Depending on their ability to regulate voltage and current, controllers are rated. A scooter with a powerful motor will have a controller with a higher maximum voltage and current rating.

An electric scooter’s controller is one of the most underappreciated parts because it usually works quietly. Things can go wrong with them and cause headaches (or make the scooter unsafe). Controllers have to fail or malfunction on some poorly designed scooters.

Deck

While riding, you stand on the deck. For better traction, many are rubberized.

Skateboards and electric scooters have decks where you stand. The battery pack builds into the deck of some electric kick scooters.

The decks of scooters usually have some textured finish, which makes it easier to grip them with your shoes. A sloped deck gives you more space to place your feet on some scooters, such as the Rev pictured above.

Scooter decks are usually 14 inches by 5 inches and have a few inches of ground clearance.

Handlebars

Scooters control by their handlebars. The controls include accelerators, brakes, speed/settings displays, and power switches.

Electric scooters with folding handlebars are the most portable because they can be transported and stored more easily.

Lights

It is essential to have good scooter lighting at night so that you can see and stay visible—in most scooters, we need better built-in lighting.

Nearly every electric scooter has at least one LED headlight and brake-activated tail light. Additionally, many scooters include multi-colored LEDs that wrap around or shine from under the deck. We like to call this type of lighting swag lighting.

While swag and deck lighting can improve your scooter’s visibility and cool factor, they cannot replace powerful headlights and taillights.

Many electric scooters have disappointingly dim lights. For this reason, we almost always recommend additional lighting when riding at night.

Motor

Hub motors are in one or both wheels of adult electric scooters. A pair of 500-watt engines drive the powerhouse Wide Wheel pictured above.

Brushless direct current (BLDC) electric motors are built into the hubs of electric scooters. Every electric kick scooter has at least one engine, while more powerful ones will have two.

Watts is to express the power consumption of electric motors. A motor with a higher wattage will be more powerful.

In an average electric scooter, such as the Mi M365, the motor is 250 watts; in an intermediate scooter, such as the Horizon, the engine is 500 watts; and in an extreme performance scooter, like the Wolf Warrior, the motor is 1200 watts.

Stem

The folding metal tube connects the handlebars to the front wheels. Due to instability, the folding mechanism on some electric scooters is frustrating.

A stem or neck is the long tube that connects the front wheel to the handlebars of an electric scooter.

A folding mechanism is built into the stem of nearly every scooter to facilitate carrying and storing. Our e-scooter reviews often focus on this unsuspecting aspect. However, there is a good reason for this. In addition to being challenging to fold, the mechanism can also be loose or unstable. We call stem wobble the phenomenon of the whole stem rocking back and forth when you apply force to the handlebars. Folding electric scooters have this considerable downside.

More stem folding mechanisms are needed to include low-end scooters. Despite their otherwise immense quality, Dualtron scooters are notorious for this problem.

Suspension

High-performance electric scooters above feature beefy coil over-hydraulic suspensions.

The suspension on an electric scooter, like that on a motor vehicle or bicycle, improves ride quality and dampens road bumps.

Electric scooters usually have three types of suspension: springs, hydraulics, and air pistons. Coil-over-hydraulic or coil-over-air break found on scooters with the best vacation.

In many scooters, large pneumatic tires provide damping instead of suspension. Pneumatic tires can offer better breaks than cheap spring suspensions.

Tires

In an emergency, tires give you traction to accelerate or a brake. Pneumatic tires perform better than airless tires, like the ones pictured above.

Your electric kick scooter’s tires affect ride quality, traction, range, and braking performance.

There are two basic types of tires: pneumatic (air-filled) and airless. Airless tires come in three varieties: honeycomb, polymer-filled, and solid.

Pneumatic tires provide a better ride quality (with or without suspension) and perform better on adverse roads.
